Exploring Ocean Ecosystems, Dolphin Discoveries & Human Impacts
In partnership with Emerging Sciences Victoria, the Marine Mammal Foundation is proud to offer our ‘Splash into Science’ online short course.
Through this 6-lesson course, students will be taken on a journey of discovery and become marine mammal scientists, exploring the incredible diversity of Victoria’s marine environments, the marine mammals who call it home, and what they can do to make a positive difference in their classroom, school, and wider community - right from their very own classroom!

Lesson 1 Thursday 6th November
Marine Environments of Australia.
Explore the incredible diversity of Australian marine environments and the organisms who call them home.

Lesson 2 Friday 7th November
Discovery of the Burrunan dolphin.
Follow in the footsteps of MMF Founding Director Dr Kate Robb, and discover a new dolphin species!

Lesson 3 Thursday 13th November
Burrunan dolphin populations
Become real marine mammalogists to study our Burrunan dolphin populations.

Lesson 4 Friday 14th November
Understanding marine ecosystems
Discover how Burrunan dolphins use their ecosystem, and how this information can help in the conservation of marine environments.

Lesson 5 Thursday 20th November
Litter, plastic and marine debris
Explore how litter and marine debris in your environment can impact our amazing oceans.

Discover the simple and effective steps you can make to be a leader for change at home, at school, and your community.
Course Information
Participation in the ‘Splash into Science’ short course is extremely limited.
All classes will be broadcast live online Thursdays 9:50am - 10:50am, and Fridays 12:30pm - 1:30pm.

The ‘Splash into Science’ short course is being provided FREE OF CHARGE to all Victorian State Government Schools by the Marine Mammal Foundation as a part of our ‘Making Waves: Marine Science and Sustainability Education for Victorian Schools’ project funded by the Victorian State Government Department of Education Strategic Partnership Program for 2024 and 2025.
Participation for all non Victorian State Government school participants is priced at $30 per student.

It is recommended all students view and participate in Splash into Science lessons using their own individual device, to facilitate engagement and participation.
All lesson plans and practical resources will be provided to teachers prior to each session.

All practical activities will be demonstrated during each lesson, and all practical activities will be completed and submitted by students following the lesson.
All assessment responses will be provided to teachers following each lesson.

Through this course, students will:
Gain a strong understanding of local marine environments.
Develop real-world applied marine mammal research knowledge and skills.
Collect, collate and interpret data to make meaningful ecological connections.
Identify, develop and communicate ideas and strategies for the conservation of local environments.
